There is evidence, particularly from studies of unemployed men, that their mortality and illness is greater than those in employment. The effects of unemployment can be divided into psychological and material. For a minority unemployment will be welcomed. They may have sufficient income from redundancy money, pension, and state benefits, etc. yet be released from what might be a noisy and hazardous work environment. In addition leaving certain forms of work behind may reduce stress and give an opportunity to engage in valued activities.

However, for the vast majority unemployment forms a major life crisis. There is a fall in income which will affect the material resources available to the unemployed and their family. Secondly, there are major psychological changes: the unemployed person suffers loss of role and way of life; there is a loss of social contacts which were maintained through work; there is loss of self-esteem; and there is anxiety about the future and feelings of rejection. Many of these harmful health effects may in addition extend to the families of the unemployed.

It has been argued that the diseases which cause death, in particular heart disease and cancer, are closely linked with male lifestyle in our society. Men seem to be more competitive, aggressive and rushed: they therefore are more likely to indulge in health-harming activities - smoking, alcohol, bad diet, etc. - 47 Ethnicity as a coping response, and this, combined with the direct effect of these stressors, leads to a higher incidence of fatal diseases (Waldron, 1976). Women on the other hand have different sorts of stressors.
